The Opera and the Bike

There are projects you finish. And there are projects that stay with you long after.

Tosca is the latter.

It began with a brief we’d never received before. Johan, a doctor and passionate cyclist who already rides a Festka Rover, came to us with a request that went far beyond the technical. He wanted his next road bike to carry the emotion he experiences when listening to Puccini’s Tosca. The intensity. The beauty. The tragedy.

That became the starting point of everything.

Building the concept

Before sketching a single line, we listened. To the opera, repeatedly. We studied its emotional structure, the way passion and darkness coexist, the way the story shifts from colour to shadow.

The red was the first design decision, and the most difficult. A red that transforms. It begins with life and passion, then darkens as it travels across the frame, echoing the opera’s final act. Finding that exact tone took a long time. It was worth it.

Then came the Tosca figure, hand-painted directly onto the frame by Eva. One of a kind, in every sense.

The golden strings followed. The moment we applied them, the emotional language of the bike came alive.

A deliberate tribute to European craft

Johan wanted the bike to tell a single story from every angle. So we chose components that belonged to the same tradition as the opera itself: Campagnolo Super Record from Italy, Schmolke carbon from Germany, an Italian saddle. Every element is a small statement about European craftsmanship and the culture it produces.

The frame itself is built on Festka’s Scalatore platform, our precision road geometry, refined over years of development in Prague.

The handover

Johan flew to Prague with his whole family for the delivery. Afterward, we all went together to see Tosca at the Prague State Opera.

During the opening act, Tosca walked onto the stage wearing a dress in exactly the same shade as the bike.

Some moments you can’t plan.

In the video Johan talks about commissioning a bike that was truly made for him, what the process felt like, what it means to own an object built around your emotional world, and what happened that evening at the opera.
